Sure we’ve all had our share of common cold and headaches but in many cases, these mild disorders go on to become serious diseases. Sinusitis is a major disease which starts off as common cold and is then accompanied by a bacterial, viral or fungal infection. In this disorder, there is basically an inflammation in sinuses. Now, sinuses are small and hollow cavities which are filled with air. These are present behind the nose, in cheekbones, behind forehead and between eyes. The main function of these are said to be the production of mucus which keeps the nose moist. They are also said to improve the quality of our voices and provide a guard against pollutants. The inflammation of these cavities is what causes problems. The disease may be acute if it lasts for 3-8 weeks but if sinusitis lasts for more than 8 weeks, then you might have chronic sinusitis. Sinuses swell due to infection. You may experience headache or pain in your face and nasal congestion. There is also a greenish discharge from your nose. Pain depends upon the particular sinus which has been affected. Ayurveda names sinusitis as Dushtaprathisyaya. It suggests that there is an imbalance in doshas or energies whenever there is any disorder. These doshas govern our body, mind and soul and a balance in these doshas is pivotal to lead a healthy life. In case of sinusitis, it is seen that there is an imbalance in mainly Vata and Kapha dosha which goes on to affect the Pitta dosha as well. The Vata dosha which is basically in charge of our skull and brain is affected. Kapha dosha, when manifested in excess amounts, is responsible for the inflammation of sinus which is filled by toxic mucus. Pitta dosha is also imbalanced.
