Jaundice Causes and Symptoms

Jaundice or Iceterus is the most common type of liver disorder and is categorized by the yellow color of skin and sclera of eyes. When the red blood cells are broken down, Bilirubin, a yellow color waste product is produced which is filtered by the livers. When the liver is unhealthy, it becomes less effective to eliminate the bilirubin from the bloodstream and hence it circulates in the whole body causing the skin to become yellowish. Infants have more red blood cells plus their liver is not fully developed, thus jaundice is very common in infants. Jaundice is not a disease but an underlying disease which is a symptom of other diseases like hepatitis, liver failure etc. Jaundice Causes as per Ayurveda In ayurveda, jaundice is known by the name “Kamala.” According to ayurvedic scriptures, jaundice is caused due to the pitta aggravation.  Increased intake of spicy, fatty, salty food and alcohol increases pitta dosha and aggravated pitta affects the liver muscles and blocks the channels of the liver, thus making liver less efficient which ultimately results in a liver disorder. Jaundice Symptoms Other than discoloration of skin and whites of eyes, symptoms of jaundice include fever, weakness, fatigue, lack of appetite, drowsiness, nausea, light colored stools, constipation, headache, burning sensation in the body and also itching in some cases.
