The 3 Doshas in Ayurveda – Vatta, Pitta, Kapha
Ayurveda has prevailed in India for so long since the medieval times. It is the oldest health care system which originated in India thousands of years ago. It is a holistic approach towards maintaining health by taking into account all physical, mental and spiritual aspects of a person’s life. Ayurveda focuses on prevention more than cure. Each individual is believed to have energies which govern his mental and physical health. There are three biological energies which are present throughout a person’s mind and body. These together decide a person’s health status and are thought to be unique in the way they function to affect an individual. These energies are known as Doshas. The names of the three doshas are - Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These doshas are believed to have their origin from the Five basic Elements also called as Pancha bhoota. These are Prithvi or Earth, Jal or Water, Agni or Fire, Vayu or Air, Aakash or Space. The predominance or co-dominance of these doshas in a person goes on to decide the kind of characteristics a person will own. It is said that in some people, all the doshas are present in a balanced state while in others, one dosha might be present more or less than its normal amount. This might cause some disorders (Read more about dosha imbalance and its symptoms).
