Indian fashion has changed drastically today. This is true especially for women, who have experienced being cladded, head to toe, in traditional sarees, covering their heads in long “Ghoonghats”, to today’s chic indo-western styles that can breath life into any occasion. As we know, India is a country of diverse cultures, which is why the clothing styles are assorted as well. The history of the saree can be traced back to approximately around 1500 BC. Then, the manner of wearing a saree differed among classes and occupations, and from region to region. The advent of the British rule in 1858 also resulted in significant changes in the manner of wearing a sari. Today’s records show there are more than 80 different ways to drape a saree. The Salwar Kameez also known as “Punjabi Suit”, has been the second most popular attire in India, post independence. However, its origin traces back to the pre-Mughal era when it was worn by almost everyone in the Indian sub-continent. The salwar suit was a mixture of the tunic and loose pants that were worn by the Mughals and the draped outfits worn by the native common folk. Over the years the salwar suit has transformed itself into varied styles, designs, and cuts. Along, with the physical change its name has also seen a lot of variation over the decades. After the Salwar suit, comes the Lehenga or as it was originally called, “Ghagra Choli”. Alike the other two Indian attires, the lehenga choli too has travelled through many development, which gives it the beauty and grace today. During the Mughal era, it was considered as the royal Indian attire and was worn by every woman.
