It is very important to understand the way the 3 doshas in ayurveda - Vata, Pitta and Kapha - influence our physical and mental health. When the doshas are balanced, the person remains healthy but imbalance in the doshas leads to disorders.  There are basically 2 kinds of imbalances – natural and unnatural. The natural imbalance is one that may be caused due to age, time of day or season. Eg. Kapha imbalance predominates during childhood and during late winter and spring, pitta dominates in middle age and during summers while Vata dominates in latter part of life and during the fall season. This kind of imbalance is natural and does not lead to any kind or disorder. However, it is the unnatural dosha imbalances which create problems. These unnatural imbalances generally happen due to inappropriate diet or lifestyle, parasites and viruses. The imbalance leads to increase of a dosha which is the prime cause of disorder. The decrease of a dosha may also be the reason for a disease but to a lesser degree. It is important to keep doshas in check as the imbalance interferes with the functioning of our body.
