The Ear Cuff Saga

Stylish and trendy, ear cuffs are not new to the world. They have been in existence for thousands of years. Worn on the rim of the ear with or without the need of ear piercing, these ear cuffs make a strong style statement and are definitely in the must have list of every fashionista. Primarily made with gold and silver in the past, the present day ear cuffs are also made with other affordable materials. One can choose from plain ear cuffs to decorated ones and those glittering with gemstones. The first ear cuff that was recorded in history was in 2000 BC. It was called kaffa and was found during the excavations in British Isles. Kaffa differs from the ear cuffs of today, which consist of earrings and clip-ons that attach to the ear lobes. Kaffa was made to attach to the pinna, the visible outside edge of the ear. So to wear these ear cuffs, ears did not have to be pierced. These ear cuffs were available in elaborate deigns and large sizes. Early kaffas were made of brass and were worn by both men and women. Later, in 350 BC, golden kaffas were found to be adorned by the Greek aristocrats. They were more elaborate and fine in design and were worn as status symbols. Images of kaffa were found in ancient Indian art, which dated back to the 12th century. These were made with precious metals and stones. They were decorated with several chains and pearls and they were clipped from the earlobe to the nose or the hair. These were worn mostly on weddings and important celebrations. Ear cuffs in India were known as kaan phool. Even now you can see women wearing ear cuffs for weddings, festivals and other such celebrations.
