The kind of lifestyle we follow today with all the technology hindering our movements, it is safe to say that obesity is quite a common problem. Being overweight is the problem of almost every other person these days. Being obese or over weight basically points towards having or accumulating a lot of fat tissues in your body. Unnecessary and excessive weight can hurt your self-confidence and embarrass you sometimes. Not only this, obesity leads to many other serious health problems. It is quite clear that obesity is in no way helpful but is rather harmful for us. Ayurveda has a holistic approach towards the treatment of obesity. Obesity is known as Sthaulya in Ayurveda. The fat tissue, which is one of the seven tissues acknowledged in Ayurveda, is known as meda. In Sthaulya, meda increases or flourishes more than the other tissues. This is also known as medaroga. Causes of obesity as per Ayurveda The 3 doshas in Ayurveda - vata, pitta, kapha are the biological energies that govern our body and mind. Sometimes, when there is an imbalance in the doshas, it leads to certain health disorders. Obesity or Sthaulya is also a result of this imbalance. An imbalance in vata dosha increases agni, i.e digestive fire which leads to an increase in appetite. As a result of this, the food consumption increases but the consumed food keeps on storing in the body as fat. This happens as the conversion of fat tissue (medi) into bone (asthi) gets hampered. This increase in fat tissue is associated with increase in Kapha dosha. This contributes towards obesity.
