Diabetes is amongst that cluster of diseases. Diabetes is a chronic disease which remains with the person lifelong. It results in either producing low insulin or no insulin. And hence there are two types of diabetes - type 1 and type 2. Type 1 is known as insulin deficient because body doesn’t make insulin and type 2 is known as insulin resistant because either body doesn’t make enough insulin or is unable to utilize it effectively to regulate blood sugar level. While type 1 patients have to infuse insulin in their blood through injection, type 2 patients can survive on oral medications and proper lifestyle. Before understanding diabetes, lets first understand how our body functions in absence of diabetes or how our body metabolizes glucose. Carbohydrates are regarded as energy-giving food and a significant portion of our meal consists of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates contain starch and when we eat it and it reaches down to our stomach, enzymes work on it and convert it into glucose. Blood carries it to all the cells of the body and the energy is derived. But the problem is, the absence of insulin makes it impossible for the cells to absorb glucose. To make it simple to understand, consider that the cell had its gate locked and to open it, we need key and insulin is that key. Pancreas is responsible for secreting insulin and in diabetes, no or little insulin is produced. Hence the glucose is unable to enter the cells and it starts piling up in blood vessels.
